Transfer admission to Washington University is both selective and competitive. In any given year, any academic division may have from zero to a small handful of slots available.
With this small number of transfer spots open, we recommend the strongest candidates for admission present proof of a high school diploma or equivalent and proof of a high level of academic success at their current institution.
Successful applicants present at least a 3. Some of our academic divisions require specific grades in specific courses. For example, students with interests in engineering, business, or the physical or biological sciences must present a strong background in science and mathematics, including calculus.
In addition, you must have left your current institution and all previous institutions in good standing and be eligible to return.
If you have been away from a formal academic setting for more than two years, we generally recommend you complete at least one year 30 hours of work at another college or university before submitting your application for transfer admission.
If you are in your first year of college, you must present at least one completed semester of full-time college work with your application for transfer admission or submit a completed Mid-Semester Progress Report.
You should select the division which offers the major program that most interests you. Because slots for transfer students are very limited, when you are admitted to a division you will be expected to remain in that division after you enroll at Washington University.
Should you decide to pursue a major in a different division, you will be required to apply for transfer into that division after one full semester at Washington University. Transferring between divisions is not guaranteed. Transferring as a pre-medicine student is challenging. We recommend that students interested in pre-medicine apply as junior-level transfers having completed the following coursework:.
Additional coursework in biology and chemistry is advised. Most applicants take advantage of honors, advanced placement, and International Baccalaureate courses, if offered by their high schools.
Applicants to the various undergraduate schools will need to bring unique, discipline-specific attributes with them. Students interested in studying architecture or art should demonstrate interest, skill, or background in art and design by highlighting relevant course work or extracurricular activity. A portfolio is required for applicants to the College of Art and encouraged for applicants to the College of Architecture.
If you plan on joining the roughly 30, WUSTL hopefuls for the next admissions cycle, you should know the following:. It could be an idea, book, project, cultural activity, work of art, start-up, music, movie, research, innovation, question, or other pursuit. This is a perfect opportunity to share something about yourself that is not included elsewhere in your application. Speak to your absolute truest passions in life here, not just what you think an admissions officer would want to hear.
However, you will be asked to answer some WashU-specific questions on the application, most of which are simple multiple-choice questions. These supplemental questions are grouped into five sections: General, Academics, Activities, Contacts, and Family. This application form was created by the Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success , an organization of which WashU and 51 other colleges and universities are members.
The Coalition App asks for a great deal of the same information as the Common App, though it differs in some places in terms of how it goes about asking for this information, and it has its own set of essay prompts.

Interviewing and visiting the WashU campus are ways in which you can demonstrate your interest to the people who will eventually review your application. Applicants have two interview options: on-campus interviews and off-campus interviews. There are different procedures to obtain an interview for each interview type, and you can find instructions on how and when to request either type of interview on this FAQ page.
Each applicant may have only one interview overall. If you are able to visit WUSTL, you can schedule an on-campus interview when you officially register for your visit using this calendar.
As we mentioned, the school prefers applicants who have shown a demonstrated interest in the college, and making an official visit is one way to make sure your interest is officially noted. RD applicants who submit their applications by December 9th will be contacted by APAP to arrange an interview if an interviewer is available, but can also call or email APAP with any questions.

Accepted students will have until two weeks after the notification date to confirm their attendance for the upcoming year. Rejected applicants are not permitted to reapply in the RD round, but may be able to apply as transfers at a later date.
Deferred applicants will have their admissions decisions postponed to the RD timeline, and may be admitted in April. RD applicants and deferred ED applicants will receive their admissions decisions around April 1st. Deferred applicants are neither accepted nor rejected in December, but will have their applications reconsidered during the RD round with the rest of that applicant pool.
You should know that the university typically has a very large waitlist consisting of thousands of students — the school does not release exact numbers — so competition for any available spots in the matriculating class is incredibly fierce. The number of openings eventually made available also varies greatly from year to year; for instance, in , applicants were admitted from the waitlist, but in four out of the past ten admissions cycles, zero applicants were admitted from the waitlist.
Within a few weeks of the May 1st reply date, WUSTL begins considering whether there are still openings in the incoming first-year class, and may extend offers to some waitlisted applicants.
